Picture this. You are the owner of a beautiful cottage located on some gorgeous lakefront property. You can see the lake in all its beauty, with the Catskill Mountains in the background. It’s six P.M. on a lazy summer day. Firefall is playing on the transistor radio as you stretch out on your boat, with the lake water swaying to the soft rock music in the background. Okay, back to reality. Many people purchase boats for the shear relaxation that they offer. Come to think of it, have you ever seen a cottage located on lakefront property that does not have a boat docked next to it – bet you haven’t!
Over the past few generations, boating has been a summer luxury worth trying out, one that keeps rising in popularity. There are many shapes and sizes of boats to choose from. Basically it is up to you to search for the particular boat that suits your needs and then go from there. If you are planning on hitting the local river system and doing a little fishing, you might be looking into a canoe or a small motorboat. A cabin cruiser, on the other hand, would be a better choice if your idea of fun is staying overnight on your boat, may it be down at the marina or by the lakeside. You would most likely not want to spend the night in the comforts of a canoe. Your choice will be dictated by the main purpose you have in mind when going boating.
Travel to eastern Canada and you will notice the popularity of the old fashioned fishing boat. These are larger boats – and when we say large, we mean humongous – and these would be ideal for carrying larger nets and traps and other heavy-duty gear for fishing. In most cases, you probably would consider this boat as a mere afterthought, but if you’re fishing for money rather than as a pastime, you can consider the larger ones, which have their own bedrooms, or even smaller ones that are merely equipped with beds. This is a utility boat, and not really the kind of boat you can take a cruise on.
As for the yacht – no two ways about it, that IS a luxury boat. Yachts are normally quite massive and provide the luxury and comfort that many avid boaters may be looking for. However, they do come with a price tag ranging from thousands of dollars to millions of dollars.
All in all, it depends what you are looking for in terms of a boat. If you simply want to go boating in the summer on that piece of lakefront property, then go for a small cabin cruiser or motorboat. Now if you’re dealing with higher stakes and want to impress those business movers and shakers, then I bet you’re wanting to save that moolah for a yacht.
One final word, though, regardless of the boat you choose, you should always be sure to enjoy. Take the time to learn safe boating practices and get out there and enjoy the fresh air and wilderness.
